The Frontera name originally appeared on Opel's early-1990s SUV, itself a rebadged version of an Isuzu product (both brands were at the time part of the General Motors empire). It was also one of the first SUVs on the market, beating the likes of Land Rover's Freelander to the punch by half a decade.
GM used Isuzu's 4x4 expertise, chiefly in the form of the Isuzu MU off-roader, to create its own SUV for Europe. The MU wasn't just used by Vauxhall, though, because the car was sold across the globe under assorted names. UK Fronteras were built in the UK at the old Bedford factory in Luton, Beds, alongside their Opel and Holden counterparts.
